Fire Fit Hub

External ViewThe £5.2 million Toxteth Fire Fit Hub is a unique project which sees a Youth Centre with sporting facilities as part of the myplace scheme providing world class facilities for young people.

The Youth Zone at the site includes a sports hall, martial arts studio, gym and dance studio, four five-a-side football pitches, available to hire seven days a week, with some of the other indoor facilities also available for hire, and a community fire station all in one location.

The facility, built by Wates Construction, is based on the corner of Windsor and Upper Warwick Street in the heart of Toxteth. Funding for the new Toxteth Fire Fit Hub was secured through the £2.3 million Department for Education myplace initiative with an additional £2.8 million funding from Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service and £500,000 from Liverpool City Council.

A part opening of the Toxteth Fire Fit Hub will take place in early 2013 to test systems are in place and to make sure staff are fully trained for the full opening later this year.

During the life of the project Wates implemented a Local Social Economic Development plan, through which eight local apprentices have been employed by Wates and its supply chain. The apprentices were funded by the Merseyside Apprenticeship Programme.

A new group from the community was also set-up by staff from Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service to help support the Toxteth Fire Fit Hub. The Toxteth Fire Fit Hub Ambassadors is a group of young people from Toxteth and the surrounding area who helped to shape the Hub and will have a role in its governance.
