A police investigation is underway following an explosion in Wirral yesterday, Saturday 25th March.

Emergency services were called at 9.14pm to the junction of Boundary Road and Circular Drive in New Ferry, to reports of a suspected gas explosion.

As a result of the explosion several buildings collapsed. A total of 18 casualties were taken to hospital and a further 15 self-presented at local hospitals.

Two of the casualties are currently in a serious condition and are being treated at Aintree Hospital and the Walton Centre.

Firefighters searched all properties affected by the explosion and search dogs from Merseyside and Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service searched the collapsed buildings and debris. The search remains ongoing.

Merseyside Police is working to establish the cause of the explosion.

Police are also working with Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service, Wirral Council and National Grid to ensure that the area is made safe, roads are reopened wherever possible and local residents are able to return to their homes or collect their belongings as soon as possible.

The incident is ongoing and road closures remain on New Chester Road at the junction of Bebington Road (between School Lane and Windsor Close) and junction of Circular Drive at the junction of Osbourne Close. Motorists are advised to avoid the local area.

Emergency services are continuing operations at a major incident at the junction of Boundary Road and Circular Drive, New Ferry, Wirral.

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service was called at 9.14pm on Saturday, March 25th to reports of a suspected gas explosion. Crews were alerted one minute later and were on scene at 9:21pm.

Two fire engines and the Search & Rescue Team are currently at the scene. Several buildings collapsed as the result of the explosion.

A total of 18 casualties were taken to hospital and a further 15 self-presented at local hospitals. Two of the casualties are currently in a serious condition and are being treated at Aintree hospital and The Walton Centre.

Firefighters searched all of the affected properties affected by the explosion and search dogs from Merseyside and Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service have searched the collapsed buildings and debris. The search remains ongoing.

A drone from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service has been used to survey the scene.

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service firefighters are now engaged in supporting the recovery effort and the immediate area remains cordoned off.

The incident is ongoing and road closures remain on New Chester Road at the junction of Bebington Road (between School Lane and Windsor Close)and junction of Circular Drive at the junction of Osbourne Close.

Motorists are advised to avoid the local area.


Saturday March 26 11.50pm

Emergency services are currently attending a major incident at the junction of Boundary Road and Circular Drive, New Ferry, Wirral.

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service was called at 9.14pm on Saturday, March 25 to reports of a suspected gas explosion. Crews were alerted one minute later and were on scene at 9.21pm.

Eight fire engines are currently at the scene.

Several buildings have collapsed as the result of the explosion.

A number of casualties have been taken to Arrowe Park Hospital, Countess of Chester Hospital and Aintree Hospital.

Firefighters are currently liaising with Merseyside Police, North West Ambulance Service, National Grid and Wirral Council to clear debris and make the scene safe.

Police officers are also going house to house in the local area offering advice and reassurance to local residents.

New Chester Road, Pool Bank, Circular Drive, Primrose Hill and New Ferry Road are currently closed.

The incident is ongoing.
