Shop fire, Wythburn Crescent, St Helens

Fire crews are currently dealing with a large fire at a shop in Wythburn Crescent, St Helens.

Crews were alerted at 11.40pm on Wednesday 31st October and were on scene at 11.47pm. There are currently five fire engines in attendance, as well as the combined platform ladder.

On arrival, crews found the roof of a single storey shop well alight. An area of around 15m x 5m was affected.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using high pressure hoses to fight the blaze.

Crews have gained access to three adjacent shops to ensure the fire has not spread.

Local residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed. If any ill effects are experienced, dial NHS 111. If you have an existing medical condition, keep medicines close.

The incident is ongoing.

UPDATE: 02.05am Thursday 1st November

External firefighting continues. The fire has been sectorised. The command support unit is also in attendance.

Wythburn Crescent and Kirkstone Avenue have both been closed by Merseyside Police as a result of the incident.

UPDATE 6.03am

Firefighters remain at the scene this morning. The combined platform ladder is being used as a water cannon onto the building's flat roof.

Scottish Power are also at the scene.

UPDATE 6.17am

The fire has been brought under control overnight and crews are now damping down.

UPDATE 10.26am

Three fire engines remain at the scene, as well as the combined platform ladder.

Firefighters are currently using three high pressure hose reels. The combined platform ladder is being used as a water tower.

UPDATE 1.26pm

Firefighters have now left the scene and have handed the incident over to building control.

The property, which includes a row of five shops, will be secured and fenced off by building control.

An investigation into the cause of the fire will be carried out in due course.
