Fire at recycling centre, Birkenhead

Crews have been called to a fire at a recycling centre in Cleveland Street, off Duke Street, Birkenhead.

Crews were alerted at 7.20pm and on scene at 7.25pm.

2 fire engines and a combined platform ladder are in attendance.

Crews arrived to find a large pile of scrap wood across an area of 40 x 40 metres and around 15 metres high.

Residents are advised to avoid the area. More information to follow.

UPDATE 8.15PM

The incident has been sectorised and there are now 6 fire engines and a combined platform ladder on scene.

4 main jets are being used in firefighting.

Residents nearby are advised to close windows and doors.

UPDATE 9.05PM

2 ground monitors are in use, making good progress with the main pile of debris involved in the fire.

Compressed Air Foam is also in use.

The combined platform ladder is in use as a water tower. The incident is divided into 4 sectors.

A multi agency meeting is under way.

Residents nearby are advised to continue to remain indoors and keep windows and doors shut.

Road closures are still in place and the area should be avoided.

RECYCLING CENTRE FIRE BIRKENHEAD: UPDATE 9.30PM

Residents nearby should continue to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed, particularly in Cleveland St., Corporation Rd., and Old Bidston Rd.

Road closures on Cleveland St. are being maintained by Merseyside Police.

Anyone with an existing medical condition should keep medicines nearby and if any ill effects are experienced please call NHS 111.

UPDATE 10.30PM

A high volume pump(HVP) and a second combined platform ladder(CPL) have joined the existing 6 fire engines and CPL in fighting the fire.

The incident is still sectorised. It is not believed that there are any hazardous waste materials at the site.

Previous health and safety advice should be observed.

UPDATE 11.30PM

Crews continue to work hard to bring the fire under control. The fire is likely to continue for some considerable time yet.

UPDATE 6 NOVEMBER 8.30AM

Firefighting continues at the site and has been ongoing throughout the night.

Road closures have been extended to the junction of Price St. And Cavendish Rd, and Beaufort Rd. And Corporation Rd.

MFRS are supporting local businesses with business continuity arrangements.

There is still a large amount of smoke in the area and doors and windows should be kept closed.


UPDATE 10.30AM

Firefighters remain on scene at Cleveland Street, Birkenhead.

There is still a large amount of smoke in the area. Crews are monitoring this and are liaising with staff at nearby Our Lady and St Edward's Catholic Primary School. Children are safe in the school and fire crews will continue to advise staff as appropriate.

Merseyside Police and Wirral Council representatives are on scene.

Windows and doors should be kept closed.

UPDATE 1.45PM

Fire crews have now left the scene and have handed over to site operators.

Wirral Council remain in attendance. Road closures will remain in place until clean up work of the carriageway is completed and the high volume pump is removed.
