Saturday, 09 February 2019
New Causeway, Formby Bypass, Formby
Firefighters have been called to a large fire at a compost business in Formby this morning.

Four fire engines and two support appliances are in attendance.

Crews were alerted at 5.18am and on scene at 5.28am.

They arrived to find an area of compost approximately 15m by 15m well alight. Crews gained access to the yard and began to fight the fire and attempt to protect out buildings and machinery on site, using two main branches.

It is not currently believed that there are any people injured in this incident.

It is expected that New Causeway will be closed off.

UPDATE 12.40pm: Firefighting continues at the location, which has been split into two sectors - one measuring approx. 20m by 20m and the other 50m by 10m.

Ground monitors and main jet hoses are in use, as well as digging equipment.

The incident has been scaled down since this morning, however firefighters are likely to be on the scene for a large part of the day to extinguish this fire.

UPDATE 10pm: The fire has now been extinguished, with the area remaining under watch due to the potential for hot spots to reignite.

There were not believed to be any injuries or significant damage to buildings or machinery in this incident, which is thought to have been exacerbated by high winds.
