Free fire safety checks lined up for mature Merseyside residents on Older Person’s Day

Monday, 02 October 2017

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service will sweep into action this week with a packed programme of Home Fire Safety
Checks for residents over 65 as part of its support for Older Person’s Day.

Fire Crews, Vulnerable Persons Advocates and Support Staff from Service Headquarters will spend the day visiting older residents across Merseyside tomorrow (Tuesday October 3rd) offering valuable fire safety advice and fitting free smoke alarms in homes where residents are known to be over 65.

The safety operation will run throughout the day and will cover Liverpool, Wirral, St. Helens and Sefton, with firefighters, support staff and volunteers all providing important safety advice to residents as well as free home checks.

This year will be the fifth consecutive year that Merseyside Fire and Rescue has supported Older Person’s Day with increasing success each year.

Last year the service visited over 1,500 properties and completed over 1,000 Home Fire Safety Checks for older residents.

During these visits 42 residents were found to be at high risk from potential fires in their home, all of whom may have not have been identified without the visits on Older Person’s Day.

This year the teams of staff and volunteers will be targeting around 1,000 properties in the Merseyside area, particularly those who have not received a Home Fire Safety Check in the past two years.

Jen Taylor, Volunteer Co-ordinator at Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: “Older residents can be particularly at risk of fire in their homes, especially if they may still be using old appliances or do not check their smoke alarms on a weekly basis.

“Our teams of firefighters and staff volunteers will be out in the community giving important advice and support throughout the day, all of which we hope will help save lives among the more vulnerable members of our community.”

If you are over 65 and would like to receive a Home Fire Safety Check, please call 0800 731 5958 for further details.
