Retained
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service have recently reintroduced retained firefighters after a long period of time when we hav ebeen a ‘Wholetime’ only service. Our retained personnel are based at Southport Community Fire Station and work alongside the Wholetime (full time firefighters) based there.
Many retained firefighters have other full or part-time jobs, but when the call comes they are ready to drop whatever they are doing and respond to an emergency situation. Our retained fire-fighters respond to a range of emergencies using a bleeper system. They may be at home or at work but when the bleeper sounds they have to report immediately to the Fire Station. For this reason our current retained staff have to live or work (or retain a base) within 5-6 minutes of South port Fire Station in order to be able to respond quickly.
Retained personnel attend the same range of incidents as Wholetime firefighters. These may be fires, floods, road traffic collisions or chemical spills.
The entry requirements for retained firefighters are the same as that of Wholetime firefighters.
