A series of demonstrations aimed at reducing deaths and injuries on roads were held by our Service as part of UK Road Safety Week.
The events were part of the week-long campaign by the Chief Fire Officers’ Association (CFOA).
The MF&RS crash car trailer was at Sainsbury’s in Upton and it was also at Liverpool One, where firefighters were accompanied by the Prince’s Trust Toxteth Team 20.
Annie Richards, who was visiting Liverpool from Weston-Super- Mare, said: “I think it’s excellent to hold it in the middle of town where you can catch people as they are walking up and down. It’s good to have the crash car and there should be more things like this to show people.”
There were also road safety demonstrations held in Church Square in St Helens and Asda in Huyton.
Events were also held at schools, including Holy Family in Thornton and Cowley International College in St Helens,
where firefighters gave a Suddenly From Nowhere road safety presentation, followed by road collision rescue demonstrations in the school grounds.
Lucy Murphy, a Holy Family pupil, said: "When I was chosen to be cut out of the car I felt quite scared, but excited in a way because I got to see the dangers I could get myself into and realise how safe I do need to be when I learn to drive.
The whole experience made me wary of what I could possibly do to a strangers’ life. I do not think enough people realise that they can take theirs or someone else's life away in such a short space of time."
There were 336 people injured and eight people killed in road traffic collisions attended by Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service in 2013. Of those injured, 27 were under 18-years-old..
There have also been 213 people injured and two people killed in road traffic collisions attended by Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service in 2014 so far. Of those injured, 11 were under 18.
Cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and young drivers are being particularly targeted during the week.
Watch Manager John Cousins, of the MF&RS Road Traffic Collision Reduction Team, said: “The aim of the week was to help reduce the number of people injured or killed on roads. Deaths and injuries on the road not only affect the individual involved but have a devastating impact on their families and loved ones.”
