Shining Examples
Firefighters from Toxteth were recognised by the High Sheriff of Merseyside for their part in the rescues carried out after the yellow Duck Tour boat sank.
The crew from Red Watch at Toxteth received a Hidden Gems award after the High Sheriff Ian Meadows highlighted how impressed he was with the rescue.

Station Manager Paul Kay also nominated Lisa Smith, Prince’s Trust Team Leader at Toxteth Fire Fit Hub, who won an award for all her hard work in helping young people over the past ten years.
The High Sheriff had visited the Toxteth Fire Fit Hub on Christmas Day and saw the valuable work it does. Jennifer Van der Merwe, manager of the Hub, also attended the Hidden Gems event, which was held at The Florrie in Toxteth.
Station Manager Kay accepted the award on behalf of Red Watch and Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service, while Lisa Smith was there to pick up her award.
There were also a number of dignitaries and representatives of community organisations at the event.
Station Manager Kay said: “I think it’s nice that somebody in such a high position has recognised the hard work that goes on in the fire service day to day.
“I nominated Lisa because of the number of young people’s lives she has changed for the better over the years, which is really inspiring.”
Firefighters from Liverpool City Community Fire Station were also involved in the rescues when the Duck Tour boat started to take on water in June last year.
