From the Chair...
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Authority approved its budget recently and yet again we have been subject to massive cuts in the Service imposed on us by this Coalition Government.
Merseyside has had the worst funding cuts of any fire and rescue service in the country.
As a consequence of continuing Government cuts we have reached the point where we cannot continue without reducing the number of stations we operate.
Members agreed mergers of a number of fire stations in St Helens, Knowsley and Wirral, subject to consultation. The reduction of six stations down to three will enable the Service to deliver savings from reduced premises’ overheads and staffing costs. We are also exploring what options are available to the Service within the Liverpool and Sefton areas.
These measures are needed to deliver savings to help balance an estimated budget shortfall of at least £6.5 million by 2015/16.
The decision to merge stations where possible is seen as a better option than closing stations outright, with nearly half of the £6.5 million coming from technical saving, support and back office services along with agreeing to increase the council tax levy precept by just under 2%.
With the continuing financial pressure on the Authority, I give you my assurance, along with members of the Fire Authority, that we will do all we can to lobby this and future Governments in highlighting the impact these cuts to our Service and our communities across Merseyside.
BORN ULTIMATUM
It was the first place I thought of when we decided we’d do this race for charity, and it’s our pleasure to do our bit.”

One of our Physical Training Advisers is taking part in a tough obstacle course to help raise money for charity.Firefighter Eric Atherton, who is based at Kirkdale Community Fire Station, and Firefighter Chris Wilson, also based at Kirkdale, are taking part in the Born Survivor event at Lowther Castle, Cumbria on April 5 this year. The event includes 30 military-style obstacles designed by British Royal Marine Commandos spread over a 10 kilometre distance.
They are raising money for R Charity which is the charity
for The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust and, in particular, the Linda McCartney Centre.
Eric said: "We have done this event last year and enjoyed it so this year we decided to have another go but this time wearing full fire kit and BA. I have been training since the New Year for this, both on and off station, but now, with the event being only a matter of weeks away, I'm now to experience the training in fire kit and wearing BA.”
Chris said: “The Linda McCartney Centre has, and continues to provide, fantastic support to my family over the last few years after my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer.
