Watch Manager Ken Williams and Firefighter Mark Brennan were presented with the letter from Kas by Jim Morley, a volunteer at the sanctuary.
Horse thanks Service after night mare rescue from neigh-bouring field
The crew at Crosby Community Fire Station received an unusual token of thanks after they carried out an animal rescue – a letter from the horse they brought to safety!
Firefighters were assisted by the Search and Rescue Team in helping a 24-year-old Arabian racehorse called Katsura back to her feet after she fell over in a muddy field on Rothwells Lane in Thornton.
Katsura resides at the Shy Lowen Horse & Pony Sanctuary in Thornton, which owns the field where she fell, and she was so impressed by the service provided by Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service she personally wrote a letter of thanks.
Watch Manager Ken Williams and Firefighter Mark Brennan were presented with the letter by Jim Morley, a volunteer at the sanctuary.
The letter read: “Dear firefighters, my name is Katsura – my friends call me Kas. I was born in 1990. Thank you for helping me when I was stuck in the mud.
“When I was young I worked as an Arab racehorse. When my career ended I was sold and became a riding horse.

“Eventually my owner couldn’t keep me and, in 2006, I was given to a family who were new to horses.
I didn’t mean to scare them but they thought my flighty temper was dangerous.
“I admit that after that happened I did bite viciously and, if somebody rode me, I bucked.
“The people called Shy Lowen and asked them to take me away. Once I sorted myself out I lived in a loan home for six years where I was very happy.
“I was born with a twisted cannon bone in my right foreleg so my stride is slightly affected, particularly in trot. I do still like being ridden and love to show off.
“I returned to Shy Lowen in 2013 and will now remain at the sanctuary permanently due to my age and so that my leg can be closely monitored for any problems with my mobility during my veteran years.
“Yours, Kas – Resident of Shy Lowen.”
We hoof to say we think Kas has really harnessed
her creativity in writing this letter. She really knows
how to stirrup the emotions (sorry!).
