Youth Engagement Co-ordinator Suzi Tosi-Nile updates us on all the diverse activities our new MFRS Fire Cadet units have been involved in.
“We’re thrilled to announce the success of our new Fire Cadet units, which started with us in January this year.
“There are currently five units, based at our fire stations in St Helens, Bootle & Netherton, Wallasey, Kirkdale and Croxteth.
“All the Cadet units in Merseyside follow the National Fire Cadets programme and are funded by the Youth United Foundation, a network of uniformed organisations who work with young people to help them engage with their communities.
“The programme is designed to engage with young people aged 13-18 to help them reach their full potential through a fun range of activities that contribute to safer, stronger communities.
“Since joining, our Cadets have taken part in a number of ‘social action’ activities which have included four car washes at MFRS stations, sponsored silences and gardening work.
“They have also played bingo with elderly residents at a care home, donated goods to local food banks and homeless shelters and supported the MFRS Heritage and Education Centre at a community day at RAF Woodvale.
“One of our Cadets, Jack Brown, enjoyed working at Nazareth House care home in Crosby so much that he is now an active volunteer there.
“The units have also been involved in a range of diverse activities including practical ops drills, visits to our Fire Control and Marine Rescue Unit, water safety and Dementia Friends training and practical skills workshops.
“Our Cadets and volunteers have given so much time and commitment to their activities as part of their programme, many of which have been carried out in their own time during weekends.
“They should all be very proud of what they have achieved to benefit members of our community.”
