A group of students from Wirral Met College attended a road safety session at Birkenhead Community Fire Station.
Sixth formers were given a “Suddenly From Nowhere” presentation, led by Watch Manager Andy Blythe, highlighting the dangers on roads and offering advice to young drivers.
The aim of the session, which is held regularly for students from the college, is to reduce road collisions and raise road safety awareness.
before firefighters demonstrated the equipment on a fire appliance that is used to rescue people following road collisions.
They were told how a number of factors can cause an increased risk of a collision, including using mobile phones while driving, speeding, not wearing seatbelts, distractions in the vehicle and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Students were also told how
young people can be particularly
in danger of having a collision
due to a lack of experience,
peer pressure, becoming easily
distracted, showing off and being irresponsible.
Statistics from the Department for Transport show there were 126 people killed or seriously injured (KSI) in road collisions in Wirral in 2013. In Merseyside there were 557 people killed or seriously injured (KSI) in road collisions in 2013.
Station Manager Alan Fletcher, who organised the visit as part of an ongoing partnership with the college, said: “The visits to the station have proven to be really successful.
“It is important to reach people who are of the age where they will be passing their driving test or getting behind the wheel for the first time.
“There has been a great response from the students who really seem to have taken away important messages from the visits.”

Last term around 250 students aged 16 to 19 from the college took part
in the sessions at the fire station, after Watch Manager Gordon
Smith first set up the sessions at the station on a trial basis.
