Electrical fire, Liverpool Cathedral

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance at an incident at Liverpool Cathedral on the afternoon of Friday 1 May.

Crews were alerted at 14.44 and on scene at 14.49, with two fire engines and one aerial appliance attending.

Firefighters responded to reports of a fire at the top of the tower, with smoke visible.

MFRS crews investigated and confirmed this was an electrical fire on the balcony on the top floor of the cathedral. Firefighters fought the fire, and the building was evacuated.

At 15.22 the main body of fire was extinguished, Fire Service personnel are liaising with onsite staff to isolate utilities and make the scene safe.

This incident is ongoing, please avoid the area.

UPDATE 5.15pm

Fire crews have continued to damp down the area affected and check temperature readings, which are now at a normal level. After handing over to onsite staff, firefighters left the scene at 5.02pm.
