Fire crews are in attendance at a fire on Cleveland Street, Birkenhead.
Crews were alerted at 3.30pm and on scene at 3.34pm. Four fire engines are on scene.
On arrival crews found a one storey, mid terrace unit fully involved in fire.
Firefighters began fighting the fire externally with one hose reel jet and one main branch.
The incident has been sectorised and four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are fighting the fire internally using two main jets.
The occupant was out of the building prior to fire crews arriving and is being treated for slight smoke inhalation.
Fire crews are damping down adjacent units to prevent fire spread.
The main seat of fire has been extinguished and crews remain on scene to damp down the area.
North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) and Merseyside Police and Scottish Power are in attendance.
Road closures are in place, please avoid the area.
