Fire crews have been called to a chemical spillage from a Lorry off Knowsley Expressway, Newstead Road, Widnes, this afternoon. Crews were alerted at 2.14pm and on scene at 2.22pm, with four fire engines currently in attendance.
Crews arrived to find a dry powder substance leaking from a lorry. Fire crews set up a 25 metre cordon around the vehicle and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus began to deploy a chemical spill kit to limit the spread of the chemical, block any run off into drains and contain the spillage.
An MFRS hazardous materials officer is on scene and efforts are being made to establish the nature of the spillage.
Roads in the vicinity are closed including Newstead Road in both directions with traffic being managed by Police.
Please avoid the area, the incident is ongoing.
UPDATE - 5.15pm
Following an inspection of the chemical, the vehicle was deemed safe to move and was transported off site for further testing.
Crews then handed the scene over to Merseyside Police and left at 4.08pm.
