Fire crews have been called to a fire in a large pile of manure in a field off Frankby Road, near Bay Tree Road, Frankby. Crews were alerted on Friday 17th April at 7.36pm and on scene at 7.43pm.
Crews arrived to find two large piles of horse manure amounting to around 1000 tonnes, across an area 50 metres square with one pile well alight. Smoke was affecting nearby Frankby Road, which has been closed.
Crews are dampening down the piles wearing breathing apparatus and have done so continuing into today, Saturday 18th April, using main branch hoses and ground monitors.
Relief crews have been taking over throughout the incident which has been prolonged and will continue for some time. There are currently two fire engines in attendance.
There is significant smoke and a foul smell coming from this incident, local residents should keep doors and windows closed. If you have an existing medical condition keep medicines to hand and if any ill effects are experienced dial NHS 111 for advice.
