Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service is in attendance at an incident at Gladstone Dock, Bootle.
Crews were alerted at 18.44 and on scene at 18.52. Six fire engines are currently on scene.
Crews arrived to find a scrap metal fire measuring approximately 50 metres by 30 metres, and 25 metres in height. Firefighters immediately began using a main branch hose to fight the fire with the assistance of onsite staff separating the material using a crane.
The incident is ongoing.
Due to large volumes of smoke, residents nearby should keep doors and windows closed. If you have an existing medical condition, keep medicines or treatment nearby and if any ill effects are experienced dial NHS 111 for advice.
UPDATE 21.15:
The fire has been sectorised and compressed air foam systems (CAFS) are in use in certain areas to assist in extinguishing the fire. An aerial appliance is also on scene to assist with fighting the fire from a height.
A tugboat is now on scene and is applying water to the main body of fire.
UPDATE 23.25:
Following successful firefighting techniques, the incident is being scaled down to two fire engines.
Onsite staff are continuing to help dig out piles to be dampened down, and tugboats remain on scene to assist.
