Scrap metal fire, Bootle

Date:

Location: Regent Road, Bootle

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) are in attendance at an incident on Regent Road, Bootle, on the morning of Monday 28th April.

Crews were alerted at 06.59 and on scene at 07.05 with four fire engines and the high volume pump (HVP) attending.

This is a large pile of scrap metal well alight, measuring approximately 40 metres by 30 meters, and 20 metres high.

A crane is in operation to remove combustible material from the pile, with the onsite plant machinery creating a fire break.

Firefighters used on site main jets fed by a water tank while hydrants were established.

The MFRS operational drone has been requested to assist at scene.

At 07.49, this incident was sectorised with firefighters utilising two main jets in sector one, and one main jet in sector four to fight the fire.

A multiagency meeting has taken place and firefighters are working hard to contain and extinguish the fire.

UPDATE 12.30

A tactical plan was put in place and the HVP in operation at 08.36. At 09.28, firefighting activities ceased and plant machinery was used to move the remaining pile of scrap metal to confirm no fire spread.

A further multiagency meeting was conducted just after 10.00, with Police reopening the main road into Alexandra Dock. The port is now operating business as usual.

Crews laid out two main covering branches and monitored the scene with no sign of smoke or fire.

Advice was then given to onsite staff to monitor the area periodically, before crews made up their equipment and left the scene at 11.39.
