Scrap metal fire, Kirkdale

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) are in attendance at an incident on Regent Road, Kirkdale, Liverpool on the afternoon of Saturday 19th July.

MFRS crews were alerted at 13.05 and on scene at 13.06 with an initial six fire engine attending.

On arrival, this is one pile of scrap metal approximately 20 metres x 20 metres well alight. Two main branches are in use and water supplies have been established.

Cranes have been requested to assist at scene, as well as Merseyside Police to support traffic management.

UPDATE 14.30

The incident has been sectorised, with ground monitor and two main jets in use.

As a result of a meeting with the responsible person, the tactical plan is to use onsite plant machinery to create a fire breaks, with smaller sections of scrap metal created from the larger pile to apply compressed air foam systems (CAFS) and water to extinguish the fire. Crews will continue to monitor temperatures at scene as a safety measure.

A Merseyside Police drone has been deployed to enable an aerial view of the scene.

UPDATE 15.10

The Tactical plan remains the same, one crane operator is breaking up the scrap metal into smaller piles to enable fire extinguishment.

Residents nearby should keep doors and windows closed. If you have an existing medical condition, keep medicines or treatment nearby and if any ill effects are experienced dial NHS 111 for advice.

UPDATE 16.10

Crews have made great progress alongside on site personnel, the scene has been handed over to the responsible person, who will monitor temperatures and conditions on site.

A hot debrief has taken place and crews left the scene after making up their equipment at 16.09.
