Waste Recycling Unit Fire, Kirkdale

Firefighters are currently in attendance at a large fire at a recycling facility on Foster Street, Kirkdale.

Crews were alerted at 5.21am and on scene at 5.26am. There are currently 8 fire engines in attendance as well as an aerial appliance and the high volume pump.

On arrival crews found a large quantity of waste material on fire inside a structure approximately 50m x 20m.

Residents and businesses nearby should keep windows and doors closed. Anyone with existing medical conditions should keep medicines nearby and should call NHS 111 if ill effects occur.

The incident is ongoing.

Update 7.00am 

Firefighters continue to deal with a significant fire. A second aerial appliance has arrived on scene to support firefighting actions. The incident has been sectorised into three sectors, with 2 main branch hoses, 2 aerial appliances and ground monitors in use. The High Volume Pump (HVP) has been set up to draw water from the nearby canal for firefighting.

The incident is likely to continue for some time, please avoid the area.  

Update 3.00pm

Firefighting continues at the site, with excavators from the site being used to drag out waste so any fire can be fully extinguished. United Utilities are assisting with pumps and tankers drawing away foul water from the site for safe disposal. The incident is ongoing. 

Update 6.15pm

The fire has now been suppressed. Crew are damping down the area and operations are beginning to be scaled down.
