Prior to joining MFRS as a Community Safety Apprentice, Sam completed an electrical installation course at college. After deciding this wasn't the path he wanted to follow, he opted for an apprenticeship with MFRS.
I couldn't think of a better apprenticeship than one in MFRS. I have gained so many new experiences, new skills and knowledge during my time with MFRS, much more compared to most 18 year olds. One of my most memorable days was a residential stay at Brathay, which helped me build skills in team work and will be an experience I'll never forget.
I decided to apply for an apprenticeship as I am a very practical learner. Like in every role, some tasks are less favourable, like paper work. However, there is a lot of hands on work too. This is the type of work I'm interested in doing and I find I am learning a lot better and faster.
I think being paid for your education is great - the experience and qualifications I am gaining from doing the apprenticeship are really beneficial.
Since doing the apprenticeship, my friends and family have realised I made a really great choice in applying. Most of my friends are actually regretting not going for an apprenticeship as their choice of education, because they look at it now and see you can gain work experience and qualifications at the same time.
